Multicultural classes are becoming an increasingly frequent phenomenon in Greece, arising from the massive refugee and migration flows since the beginning of 2015. With the refugee crisis in the spotlight and Greece at the geographical borderline of EU values, the proposed project aims at bridging the gap between the new generations of European citizens and non-European residents, sharing today the same classroom and aspiring to develop a common sense of European consciousness. Drawing on the successful output coming out of the Centre’s preceding “Learning EU at Schools” and “Stimulating EU Teaching at Schools” projects of 2013 and 2014-2016, this initiative aims to reach teachers from secondary education who teach in multicultural classes, in areas where the highest proportions and flows of refugees and migrants have been noticed.Teachers will be trained through 8 specially designed workshops so as to acquire a comprehensive overview of the evolution and present functions of the EU system, its legal foundations, institutional and governance structure, policy competences and policy-making procedures; as well as a better understanding of the European Citizenship, the promotion of shared values, mutual understanding, social and cultural inclusion. At the same time the participants will also be provided with the necessary skills and teaching techniques that will enable them to transpose and convey their acquired knowledge to their multicultural classrooms. To maximize the impact of the project, two conferences will be conducted in which specialists possessing the appropriate expertise will use case studies teaching, discuss thoroughly new innovative approaches and techniques and will join in an interactive, problem-solving - oriented discussion with participants and representatives from civil society, authorities engaged in the process of integration on local, regional and national level, decision makers and stakeholders of education and integration.
