"Following the Thracians" is a project under Key 1: Learning mobility for individuals - European voluntary service, from the Erasmus+ programme, which includes a series of voluntary short-term group activities. In this project 30 volunteers from 6 countries will participate: Romania, Estonia, Spain, Italy, Armenia and Turkey. The project will be carried out in four stages in a period of 20 months on the territory of the town of Ahtopol and the town of Velingrad. 12 volunteers will take part in the first and the second stage of the project with duration of 2 months. The first stage will be carried out from 1st July 2015 to 30th July 2015 in the ancient settlement of Ahtopol. After the activities in Ahtopol are over, the second stage will continue from 1st August 2015 to 31st August 2015 in Velingrad. There the work of the 12 volunteers will be focused on a Thracian sacred place. 18 volunteers will take part in the third and the fourth stage of the project with duration of 2 months. The third stage will be carried out again in the ancient settlement of Ahtopol from 1st July to 30th July 2016. After the activities in Ahtopol are over, the fourth stage will continue from 1st August to 31st August 2016 in Velingrad where the work of the same 18 volunteers will be focused again on the Thracian sacred place. During the period between the different stages of fieldwork preparation activities and selection of volunteers according to the needs of the project will take place.
The activities will include: fieldwork - archaeological excavations, cleaning of sites, creating maps, geophysical measuring, photographing; historical recreations based on a Thracian model; excursions with an educational purpose, connected with Thracian history; camping; drawing and describing findings, restoration; getting to know more about the customs of the local people; leading an inventory book and an archaeological diary; workshops; intercultural evenings; thematic lectures and presentations; preparing a photographic archive, short films and multimedia products about the activities on different sites.
The project aims to encourage an active youth citizenship, in particular European citizenship and also to achieve intercultural dialogue, stimulate participation in volunteer activities and promote Bulgarian archaeology and Thracian cultural heritage.
