PROJECT
FINISHED
This project arises from the wish to tackle the needs and shortcomings that we have identified over the years in our school. We are a small secondary school with a rural catchment area comprising families from low socioeconomic backgrounds with limited access to cultural activities. The main aim that has prompted us to become involved in a project such as this is to help out students to get in contact with a world beyond their everyday lives to broaden their horizons regarding the world of work. We would like to help out students to develop the skills they need to share in a European citizenship that offers them new prospects of work and the chance to be part of an international workforce. Moreover, we want to help them in their personal and overall development.
In order to do so, one of the limitations of our students have to overcome is the language barrier. Languages should be not only a means of communication but a useful employment tool. Consequently, we would like to improve the language capabilities of the school, beginning with the professional development of our language teachers and with the introduction of new strategies in our teaching approach.
The main objectives of our project are to boost the communicative skills of our students and teachers in the two foreign languages we offer at school- French and English; to enhance the quality of our methodology via the observation of teaching in other countries and the use of ICT in our classrooms; to appreciate and encourage the importance of languages as a source of culture, personal enrichment and interconnection and to promote the importance of the European dimension and the wealth of intercultural experience.
In order to carry out our project we propose the training of our teachers as a starting point to help our students and to improve our teaching approach. This training is to be based on two main activities: teacher mobility to other countries to attend professional development workshops and observation of teaching in different countries. This project will last two school years and provide the involvement of five teachers in planned trips.
In our view the training and professional development of teaching staff is the best way to ensure a better education for students in our schools. Firstly, by improving the teachers' linguistic skills in workshops we will also improve our students' linguistic skills. Secondly, observing different methodologies in other schools will provide teachers with fresh insight and tools to apply in their own classes. Finally, teacher mobility will foster contact between teachers who share the same professional interests, which could lead to future Erasmus K2 exchange programmes for our students.
We believe that the activities we envisage in our project will contribute to achieving the following objectives:
-Improvement of the linguistic competence in additional languages for teachers and students.
-Improvement of language teaching at school.
-Use of ICT in language teaching.
-Promoting the interest for additional languages among teachers and students.
- Encouragement of the idea of European citizenship. Internationalization.
