Peace is my Right!
Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Sep 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

People today are facing new “modern” types of violence that are in most of the cases considered only as “wrong” and this is where our thinking about a certain behaviour already stops. It usually does not seek enough of our attention to think about whether that behaviour is taking away someone’s opportunity for a decent life and life in peace. Many are facing psychological violence, discrimination in every day and feel stigmatized because of some personal characteristic they have. Considering that we are leaving in the time of a refugee crisis where those kinds of violence have never been shown in such an amount as one of the faces of some Europeans, Association of Maribor Students is taking an opportunity to work with youth from different parts of Europe. The reality is that we are sharing our continent with new people from different backgrounds and it is important for us to recognise our surroundings and know how to deal with it in a respectful way.For this purpose we will bring together more than 30 young people between 18 and 30 years old who come from all over Europe - Bulgaria, Estonia, Malta, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia. We will break barriers between people from different backgrounds, learn about the current situation in Europe, drop stigmas, find new solutions, promote inclusion, tolerance and learn the ways to find our peace in situations that can take it away from us – because peace is everybody’s right. We will compare the perception of the refugee crisis in the countries of the participants, develop debates, talk about psychological violence and recognize it as a serious form of violence and learn the techniques for finding inner peace through sports, meditation, yoga and similar. Participants will meet people from different backgrounds and minorities and represent their culture through intercultural evenings. They will think creatively and present the lessons from the youth exchange to children with fewer opportunities in a children-friendly way.Youngsters will learn to identify indirect discrimination, to be critical of the media and to develop their own critical thinking. They will learn the perception of the principles of equality and will be able to recognize psychological violence. They will recognize European citizen as a culturally enlightened, open-minded and tolerant individual.Through lectures, sports activities, cultural evenings, creative workshops, presentations, blog writing, intercultural evenings, meeting minorities, spending time in nature, we will achieve the objectives of the project - a step towards a more tolerant young people who carry the future of Europe which should consist of understood and happy people, capable of empathy, compassion, respect, critical thinking who recognize peace as a right of every individual.
