Start date: Aug 1, 2013,
-Eastern Initiative Institute (Poland), Association for Philosophy & Religious Studies (Ukraine), Regional Association of Youth Initiatives (Georgia) have drown up a 3 side project of young people exchange The memory in the Post-Socialist city, inviting to participate 18 people from Ukraine, Poland and Georgia in a study trip to Cracow tracking the Post-Socialist memory of European cities. Thus the topic of the project is the memory in the context of the urban area interpreted in the social and historical aspect of the past regime and the recent transformation. Our task is to share the experience of what we can do with the heritage of the old regime, and to consider the specificity of its crisis. One of the dominant ideas of the socialist city is its buildings and monuments presenting its political system. In particular, it applies to statues of activists of the regime, and to the issue of renaming or restoring old names of cities, streets and squares. The symbols of the past system are included in the popular culture and absorbed gradually. This process makes anxious some society circles: associating this legacy only with the socialist ideology, they are not willing to see it in another interpretation. Where is the line between the proper memory and preservation of the past? What should be the criteria for the interpretation of this memory, so that there would be no an old and new city? The project’s objectives are to evoke a discussion about the role of the memory in the modern Post-Socialist city, and to transform the city in an actual area of the dialog and international collaboration. The aforesaid intentions will be realized by means of a series of interactive activities: study walks, workshop, debates, games. The result of this cooperative activity will be the blog created from everyday notes of our participants concerning their impressions and reconsideration, and also the report in the Internet summarizing the achievements of the project workshop.
