OURight, OUResposibilities - an interdisciplinary approach to understanding human rights and responsibilitites

The participants in the project entitled Our Rights Our Responsibilities were Atatürk Lisesi (Turkey), Egå Gymnasium (Denmark), Märjama Muusika ja Kunstikool (Estonia) and Liceul Teoretic Onisifor Ghibu (Romania). The focus of the project was on human rights and responsibilities. The project was based on the concept of interdisciplinary teaching as a means to enhance the quality of education. We aimed at approaching key issues from the perspective of different subjects, cultures and languages, thus providing a more comprehensive understanding of civic issues in a European context. To assess the impact and to ensure the proper development of the project, both formative types of evaluation as well as summative ones (e.g. statistical analysis) were used. Teacher level: the aim of the project was to promote interdisciplinary teaching in the curriculum as well as to exchange pedagogical principles amongst teachers. This was achieved by comprising a joint teaching material (an optional course), combining different subjects (history, religion, mathematics, arts and science), for 35 lessons used in the participating schools. Pupil level: the aim was initially to develop their knowledge and competences concerning civic awareness. The project was not limited to their use of the joint teaching material but they also contributed with ideas concerning the making and teaching of the lessons. This provided the pupils with the necessary abilities to continue their education throughout their entire life.
