Open the world for unusual children

The one male volunteer from Czech Republic was taken part in the project: “Open the world for unusual children", succeffully implemented in Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia, during 9 months. Countries involved – Russia and Czech Republic. The general aim of the project was actively contribute to the process of social inclusion of the disabled children and youth who are patronized by Veras - organization for children and youth with physical disability and autism in Nizhniy Novgorod (Russia). The process of social inclusion means, first of all, to give children and youth with heatlh issues an opportunity to communicate with young people out of their families. Ofthen because in reality their personal contacts are limited within parents and specialists. The next necessary task is to open horizonts through non-formal methodology and informal encounters with EVS volunteers. Finally, such children need the individual long-term support to achieve any visible progress development. Volunteer was involved into everyday activities of day-care center for children. After adaptation period, when he deepen understand the aim and activities of organization, he was encouraged to create and implement own initiatives using previous background from home country, as well as gained skills and knowledge during EVS. Hosting organization has offered a wide range of activities to EVS volunteer. First of all, he could help in the day-stay centre, where children and youngsters with stay during the day. The tasks for the volunteer were: playing with children, helping them in socially-domestic adapting, making small workshops on handicrafts. Pedagogues were ready to teach volunteer the specifics of working with children, including introducing the variety of disabilities. Staff had had thoroughly prepared the program of activities in rder to develop children’s intellectual and communicational skills. In this case volunteer helped in carrying out different sessions/workshops and gave personal assistance to children. Using own experience, skills and knowledge, volunteer was able to bring them into action during EVS project as well as acquire new skills and competences, growing personally and professionally working with disadvantaged target group.
