The main theme of the youth exchange project 'Minorities and the challenge of social justice` that we propose is to address the topic of challenging relations between minorities and majorities in Europe. Working on this relevant topic for young people from different social groups shall be the tool to promote personal encounter and the exchange of perspectives. The project aim is to provide a space of reflection, discussions and debate on issues such as identity and ethnic belonging in relation with national and European citizenship, social inclusion and social justice. The participants are going to reflect on the status of different social minorities. The participants will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding on what social injustice means in their own society but also what it means in other societies and cultures. Nevertheless, by choosing the topic minorities we want to establish the dialogue between participants from different countries and different social groups. The project consists of a preparation meeting of 2 working days and an youth exchange of 6 working days. Both of activties will be in Heppenheim, Germany. There will be a total number of 24 participants from Bulgaria, Romania and Germany, 6 facilitators and 2 translators. A special aspect of the project is the fact that it will 50% Roma participants form each country and 4 participants with a rural background plus 2 accompaying persons that will offer language support for the whole duration of the youthexchange.This has 2 main rationalities: fostering participation of participants with less opportunities and creating an interaction space between Roma and non-Roma. They will be able to exchange experiences and different points of view and learn one from the other about how social justice can be better achieved. They will have the opportunity to meet each other but also to meet young people who belong to different majority ethnic groups. This will be a great opportunity for young people belonging to Roma communities or to different majority ethnic groups to get to know each other, interact, discuss and work together. The project is going to strengthen the feeling of belonging to a common Europe and will enable young people from different countries with interest in social equality to meet, debate, share opinions and learn about other cultures. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the similarities and differences between their social groups. The project will consist of various different methods of non-formal learning such as simulation games, moderated group discussions, debates, interactive presentations, reflection spaces and creative workshops. Participants will meet experts and local people who will present their personal or institutional experience related to the topic of minorities. These methods are shaped with the aim to foster self-expression and interaction of participants, foster their intercultural awareness, activates their European citizenship and belief in common values. The project wants to empower young people to express their own opinions and in terms of self-determination creating own ideas and aims of life. During the project, the participants will gain experience in expressing their views in the public space and they will learn how important it is to take part in the decisions of the communities they live in. The project is going to foster the active citizenship of participants in society by learning, expressing opinions and stimulating actions. Nevertheless, the project gives to the participants an active role and this will improve their transversal competences such as ability to communicate, relate in a group, presentation skills, language skills. The project aims to increase the trust in each other, to promote intercultural understanding and stimulate cooperation. The project is going to encourage participants to multiply their experiences by sharing them with other people in the time after the youth exchange. The development of this project is also going to contribute to developing partnership between the promotor organisations and increase their collaboration in the field of youth work, specially in the field of diversity and social inclusion.
