Oncovideos - Developing vocational skills in oncology through e-learning
Start date: Jan 1, 2010,

The proposed multilateral project is to design and create an innovative educational tool to assist in the delivery of continuing medical education to health professionals aiming to develop practical vocational skills in oncology. The proposed tool is an on-line library of 21 videos (of maximum 30 minutes each) showing standard procedures related to the various oncology disciplines mainly: surgical oncology, radiotherapy, medical oncology, paediatric oncology and neuro-oncology. The videos will be accompanied by practical explanations made by experts in the specific subject area of each session. The procedures performed and described by the experts will be filmed in the 18 cancer teaching partner institutions and will provide the core content of the video sessions. The tool will also include relevant features enabling the users to watch, listen, read, download, interact, and provide feedback on their needs. The transcript of each of the 21 videos and a search engine will enable users to retrieve by keyword in six different European languages in addition to English: French, Dutch, German, Italian, Polish, Slovenian. Videos will be classified by oncology discipline. The target audience will be young oncologists in Europe who need to learn the standard practical procedures related to the various oncology disciplines involved in the treatment of cancer patients . It is widely acknowledged in the oncology community that health professionals in Europe lack opportunities to participate in practical live sessions to gain the necessary competences to treat oncology patients. These practical skills are usually acquired during their daily clinical activity in a cancer institution as part of their continuing medical education programme. In addition, oncology experts lack the opportunities to pass on their ‘know how’ and best practices. The first output of the project will be a video template defining the relevant format and methodology for developing these videos. On this basis, videos will be produced in the various cancer institutions that are partners in this project where the experts on the selected standard oncology procedures are working. The topics of the videos and the relevant experts have been proposed by the different European societies in each oncology discipline. These societies are associated partners in this proposed project. The videos will be posted on the e-learning educational section of the website of ECCO – the European CanCer Organisation, the coordinating organization that will provide a user friendly interface accessible free of charge to all oncology health professionals upon registration. The videos will be accredited by the Accreditation Council of Oncology in Europe (ACOE) and will enable users to collect CME credit points. The ECCO website was certified by the Health On the Net Foundation (HON) in December 2008.The outcome of the project will be widely disseminated via the partner organizations, official partners as well as associated partners that have already contributed in developing this project proposal. Weblinks will be created from and to the European societies involved in this project. The project outcome will also be disseminated via the other ECCO member organisations – each representing the interests of their respective professions. The videos will be available in English and their transcripts translated into six European languages. If this project is supported by the European Commission, it is envisaged to translate the transcripts of the videos into additional EU languages, possibly seeking support from the EU for transfer of innovation.
