Northern Powerhouse

Northern Powerhouse is a project designed to enable young people to participate in the development of a Northern Powerhouse for the North of England as proposed by the UK Government. For young people to gain an understanding of the proposed devolved powers and finances, so they can influence its development and agenda priorities with a particular focus on youth employment and barriers to employment such as rural isolation, transport, skills, mental well bring, communication – internet, affordable housing. Using youth work informal educational methodology that draws on different learning styles, to enable young people to develop skills and knowledge around meeting management, evaluation. working in teams, communication, presentations and sharing ideas. Participants of which there will be approximately 100 young people aged 11 - 25 will be drawn from and represent different youth organisations e.g. young carers & parents, LGBTQ, faith & uniform groups, looked after, rural isolation, low income households. 20 young people, 10 from each region, will be invited to attend the Single Issue Workshop events hosted by members of the regional steering groups, to prepare for single issue dialog events with policy makers. Our application is base on five separate, but combined, Structured Dialogue topics. The objectives of this project will be; 1) To enable a group of young representatives (the youth voice steering group) to plan, manage, co-deliver and evaluate the entire project, with the support of coaches from YWUY&H & YFNW. 2) To enable young people from a wide variety of backgrounds to take part in debate and discussion around key youth policy issues connected to the development of a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ and related subjects both with each other, with youth policy makers and with politicians over different activities including day and residential experience . 3) To enable young people, from a wide variety of backgrounds representing different youth organisations, to take part in policy consultation / dialog led by other young people around the issue of creating a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ and other key youth issues and with politicians and policy makers. 4) To enable groups of young representatives, including members of the youth voice steering groups and young people from both regions to scrutinize policy and develop recommendations in the area of developing a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ and related issues based on work with politicians, youth policy makers and consultation with other young people. 5) To enable young people from a diverse range of backgrounds involved in the project to become active citizens and contribute to the development of policy ahead of the creation a ‘Northern Power House’ and beyond. At a steering group meeting on 29th March 2015 the Yorkshire & Humber Steering Group, committed to developing this project in partnership with Yorthforia. The objectives for this bid are based on regular consultation with young people who are part of regional youth voice. In addition, the steering group have started to design the project methodology and activities with YWUY&H and Youth Focus North West based on those consultations and information from key youth policy makers. Young people will continue to lead. It allows for more structured dialogue, focusing on the development of a Northern Powerhouse infrastructure with devolved powers and finance, and how this will impact on young people, with a particular emphasis on youth employment and barriers to this. Increased understanding / insight into Devolved Powers and youth unemployment solutions among young participants increased understanding of how policy and programmes can be designed to support young people in to work among organisations greater understanding among policy makers, government, deliverers of services of the views of young people and what services they want and need.
