Background
Fria Läroverken in Karlstad is the biggest independent upper secondary school in Värmland County, Sweden, with approximately 30 teachers and over 400 students. We offer a wide array of programs focused on developing the unique skills of each student. We encourage and support students to achieve their learning potential and to become independent lifelong learners by providing an integrated school approach focusing on real life learning, entrepreneurship and innovation. Our school has an international profile and we have a lot of experience from international exchange. However, on our IT program we need to strengthen the international profile and integration.
The IT Program: Objectives
• To better adapt to the international demands in our steering documents
• To provide our students with international work experience and make them more attractive on the Swedish and on the international labour market
• To motivate and offer better support for our students with special needs
• To promote European and international cooperation
• To provide our teachers with foreign learning and teaching experiences to make them more competent and to improve the quality of their teaching
Our project “New Opportunities in Multimedia and IT” enables our students and teachers to develop their skills and competencies in a foreign country. The project begins on 1 September 2015 and ends on 1 September 2017. Our students and teachers will travel to Slovakia, Czech Republic and Turkey.
Project Partners
Our three project partners have a lot of experiences from international exchange and they cooperate with a lot of companies in their areas. They are prestigious school with modern facilities and they offer education and work place training relevant to the project. The schools are located in Košice in Slovakia, Prague in the Czech Republic and Antalya in Turkey.
Activities
There will be three travels for our students and teachers. The first mobility is to Košice, the second to Prague and the third to Antalya. Sixteen students (+ three instructors) and six teachers will take part in the travels. The students’ activities will involve seminars, workshops, workplace training, study visits and journal entries. The teachers’ activities will involve classroom observations, job shadowing, workshops, seminars, workplace visits, group discussions and evaluations.
We will employ several international recognized tools/certificates to validate our students’ skills and competencies: The European Credit system for Vocational Education and Training (ECVET), Europass Mobility Document, Europass Certificate Supplement and Europass Curriculum Vitae.
Methodology
We focus on two methodologies in this project: formative assessment and information and communication technologies (ICT). Formative assessment is the assessment procedures we employ during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve our students’ accomplishment. ICT offers digital teaching and learning tools that enable innovative teaching methodologies adapted to the needs of our students. We have chosen these two methodologies in order for our teachers to become better at student assessments and to become better at using innovative digital tools in the classroom.
Impact and Result
We expect this project to have a great impact on our school community. Our teachers will develop their professional knowledge and become better teachers, while our students will develop personal qualities and become more skillful in their future profession. Both teachers and students will develop a global, lifelong learning perspective on education and work.
From a long-term perspective, we expect this project to reinforce the international profile on our IT program. Our students and teachers will get a better understanding of other cultures, which will make them more tolerant and eliminate prejudices. We expect the project to enable both students and teachers to identify themselves as European citizens.
