The project "Teachers in Europe for students with special needs" has been prepared by Specjalny Osrodek Szkolno- Wychowawczy w Szczytnie under the Erasmus+ programme Key Action 1- Learning Mobility of Individuals. We are a public school which is comprised of Special Kindergarten, Primary School, Lower Secondary School, Basic Vocational School, School Preparing for Employment. In the school there are students with mild, moderate, severe intellectual disability, physical disability with aphasia, conjugated disabilities and autism. Our students demonstrate a broad range of learning, cognitive, communicative, physical, sensory, and social/emotional differences that necessitate adaptations, modified or alternative activities, or approaches to teaching. Our school develops individual educational and therapeutic programmes, organizes the specialized psychological - pedagogical and rehabilitation care, as well as provides pupils with compensatory and therapeutic classes. A key aspect of our work is identifying individual needs and being responsible for creating a safe, stimulating, and supportive learning environment. The main aims of our 17- month project is to foster quality improvements and innovation excellence of school and enhanced transnational cooperation. The actions in the project will improve the level of key competences linked to teachers’ professional profile, improve ability to use foreign language, increase interpersonal skills and develop an understanding of the use of new technologies in special education. It is expected that the numbers of participants in the project will include 7 members of the multidisciplinary school staff: headteacher; English teacher; librarian; school counselor, teacher for students with autism and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) therapist; canine and equine therapist; teacher for students with moderate, severe intellectual and conjugated disabilities. Learning mobilities are framed within The European Development Plan of our school and responds to clearly identified development needs. The planned mobilities include: - participation of headteacher; English teacher; teacher for students with autism and AAC therapist; dog and equine therapist; teacher for students with moderate, severe intellectual and conjugated disabilities in 5-day training course “Teaching and Learning in Special Education: The Iclelandic Perspective” in Reykjavik- participation of headteacher; English teacher; librarian and school counselor in 5-day training course “All Children are Special” in Sevilla, Spain- participation of English teacher in 5- day course for “Teachers of English to Pupils with Special Needs” in Potsmouth, England. The activities planned in the project cover methodological training mobilities, refresher workshops, and guided observations of special schools. The Erasmus+ team and Selection Committee appointed by the Teachers Council will ensure the project implementation and organization. The whole project will be coordinated by school coordinator chosen by the Erasmus+ team. These bodies will act according to strict rules and scheduled tasks. The planned actions and their results will be disseminated without delay throughout the school community. The results of the project will:- bring a European dimension to education, training and organization of the school- increased ability to address the needs of students with special needs- enrich teaching methodology with new and modern teaching methods and ICT tools- apply the good practices in the field of working with autistic students, AAC therapy, dog and equine therapy, teaching English, supporting the families of children with special needs, developing individual educational and therapeutic programmes- expand the scope of cooperation with other teachers through integration into the European educational community- expand cultural knowledge and improve ability to use foreign language- enhance the interpersonal skills and team work.The project will affect not only school staff, but also the school as an institution by raising its rank in the opinion of the local community as an institution that uses the latest technological tools, new methods of teaching and administration of school activities, effectively creating the image of the school growing and open to the world. Involving members of our school staff in the European development programme within Erasmus+ project will contribute to enhancing the school activities in this field and have great impact on the intellectual development and life of a special needs students.
