Natural Awareness ThroUgh Active Learning

Natural Awareness ThroUgh Active Learning will involve 12 young people with fewer opportunities from Austria, France, Hungary, Estonia, Lithuania, Spain in the activities of an education centre in a nature reserve in the Madonie mountains to the east of Palermo. The youth will actively participate in daily care of conservation activities, educational activities and in a didactical farm. It aims to use a natural context involving young people with fewer opportunities in a path of learning and awareness of themselves and the nature, an important issue not so much considered. All project will be held in the reserve and the nature will be the context of learning and sharing between them. The duration of the project will be 1 month.It foresees to split the arrival of the volunters in two periods during 1 month for each project (6 for each group). Learning methods will be non-formal and will include active and participatory learning – “learning by doing” – and collaborative and cooperative learning. In addition UNESCO’s “Four Pillars of Education” – learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and learning to be - will be employed. In addition practical tasks will be fundamental in the volunteer’s daily programme. The secret strength of practical tasks is to offer a two-sided learning experience. On one level, practical tasks give volunteers the opportunity to try different kinds of hands- on- activities. Through these tasks they can learn many types of practical skills which can be used later in life (for example painting, cleaning, cooking, using tools, etc). On another side, the practical skills gained through these tasks are accompanied by a wide variety of soft skills. In this way, practical tasks do not just develop a young person’s manual skills but they serve to develop their social skills at the same time. This project responds to the Annual Priorities: EU Year of Volunteering, Inclusive growth and Youth employment.
