The project “Gain Experience in Europe” was implemented in the period between 1 June 2015 and 31 May 2016. It was the first time we have ever participated in the Erasmus+ programme. We have never organized work experience on a farm and on veterinary clinics in the past, so the “Gain Experience in Europe” project was an absolute novelty for our students. The work experience took place in Portugal, in the Minho region in the North. The town of Barcelos is the seat of our partner organization, Associação Intercultural Amigos da Mobilidade. This organization arranged internships for students on a farm and on six private veterinary clinics. 24 students who were successful in the selection process took part in the project. Most are students of Veterinary Medicine, with only a few additional students who study Agribusiness. All students were in their second, third, or fourth year of study. Because there were both underage students and students of age, there was also one supervisor accompanying the students in each project cycle. All internships involved real work in the form of work experience in businesses. The students worked for the period of two weeks for 6-7 hours a day, depending especially on the number of clients in the veterinary clinics. The students’ internships were recognized as part of the compulsory work experience the students have to complete during their studies. The main aim of the “Gain Experience in Europe” project was to further enhance the level of practical skills of the participating students. These days international experience in today’s Europe is a matter of course, and with this project we pursued a similar aim. Among other things the mobility project has contributed to the professional, social and personal development of the students. A secondary but welcome contribution of the project is the improvement in the students’ commitment to their studies and the increase in their interest in it. Thanks to the students’ evaluations of the project together with the observations made by the supervisors we were able to compare the quality of veterinary work in Portugal and in the Czech Republic, especially in regards to the methods and instruments used in practice. There were also partial differences in medication. We were also able to compare what it is like to run a business in agriculture in Portugal and in our country, especially thanks to a longer crop-growing season. By implementing this project we have contributed to the fulfilment of the goals of the European Union regarding secondary vocational education and student mobility in vocational education. Furthermore, we have also fulfilled the goals of the Erasmus + programme regarding the cooperation between schools and businesses and private practices. All this was done in accordance with the education strategy of our school. Because we have encountered no issues and fulfilled everything we planned in the application, a valuable partnership was established with our Portuguese partner and we will continue the internships in the next school year. We believe the project has had mainly local, but also regional impact. During the project period we focused also on the dissemination of the results of the mobility project, which are rare in the Plasy region. We provided information on the school’s website, prepared a notice board; there are boards with the Erasmus+ logo around the school, and we also issued press releases about the implementation of the project, which were reflected in the media.
