With the EVS project "Museum beyond Rhetoric: EVS remembrance project" the Austrian association Dolomitenfreunde, based in the village Kötschach-Mauthen (Kärnten), will receive a Finnish long-term volunteer from May until the end of October 2015, sent by KVT Finland. The association maintains a museum about the local mountain fights between Italy and Austria-Hungary between 1915 and 1918 as part of World War I as well as an open-air museum called "Paths of Peace" situated in the former war trenches. Thus the volunteer must have a big interest in history and in intercultural remembrance.
The volunteer will mainly work in the museum focused on the war between 1915 and 1918. Her role will be to develop more youth-friendly approaches with and for the association, to raise awareness for remembrance projects of World War I, to support the idea of volunteering as means of creating a culture of peace and to bring international energy into the rural setting of this project. By working in the museum the volunteer will help to bring a more youthful and international spirit to the museum and thus automatically reforms the atmosphere in the museum as a whole. We will encourage the initiative of the volunteer to start and create projects on his/her own, such as workshops in schools and dissemination videos/blog posts/articles etc.
Through this we want to make the volunteer a more self-aware human being, with relations to Austrian culture in an intercultural remembrance context and lots of new skills and a big amount of new knowledge. At the same time we want to encourage young people in the region to get active on the topic of World War I and to do volunteering themselves.
