PROJECT
FINISHED
Project was carried out in the situation, where globalisation and international connections are having more and more important meaning. At the same time nationalism and prejudices are rising. Our project tried to answer to those issues by increasing awareness of internationalism and its benefits among young people in Finland and in town of Pori, especially. European volunteers have been giving a huge contribution of work of association Young Pori 2100, which is a hosting organisation. We want to continue this work in benefit for European and local youth in Pori.
There was only 1 volunteer from Spain. She was willing to work in common benefit of refugees and local youth and to gain personal improvement in their skills, professional and language abilities. This helped her to improve their professional careers and personal self-fulfilment in the search for meaning of life.
Activities were: Refugee work was implemented in close co-operation with local refugee communities, local migrant organisations and other associations interested in migrant work, municipalities. With refugees was organised culture clubs, English language lessons, sport activities (volleyball, football, billiard, table tennis), meetings, cultural evenings, et cetera. Apart from refugee work there was arranged culture clubs in local youth houses, especially in our own youth house in Väinölä, suburban area in Pori. These clubs consisted of movie evenings, playing of billiard and table tennis, et cetera. Most of the time volunteer was working with the puppet theatre preparing performances to local kindergartens, schools and summer events. Also volunteer was representing different countries and their cultures in the schools. Volunteer also arranged some representations of Fair Trade in the schools and local shops.
Methodology: we used our very long experience in carrying out such activities: activities will be organised in close co-operation not only with our activists, but also other activists in local community; other associations, individuals and municipality.
As the result there will be less prejudices towards foreigners in local community; local youngsters and children will be happy about possibilities to learn and enjoy the art. Refugees will have a chance to integrate better to local society.
Potential longer term benefits will be an increased amount of youngsters who will attend the work for more tolerate society and they will also attend cultural work.
