IES Frances de Aranda is a public high school in Teruel (Spain) which has vocational training education programs. Amongst them, we have studies on Emergencies and Civil Protection. In fact, these studies began this year in our high school. We are the first high school in Aragon and Valencia and one of the firsts in Spain.
The objective of this training is that our students can be to intervene complying with safety regulations in case of different types of emergencies (natural, man-made and technological). Besides, they will be expected to learn how to organize the equipment and unities under their responsibility and to contribute to the spreading and compliance of the principles and standards of civil protection, applying the existing rules in terms of inspection and the plans of self protection for buildings and industrial facilities in Spain and other countries.
So, we have thought about the possibility that our students could complete their education in European companies and, especially CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in France. This way, our students and tutors would be interested in doing internships there, in its safety department. CERN is the most important physics laboratory in the world. It is composed of scientists and technical workers from the twenty eight member countries of the European Union. It is an opportunity for our students and teachers to get new skills and a high level of maturity and a sufficient capacity of adaptation to other cultures and situation. It is necessary to be a good worker in a global economy. Our students are looking forward to this opportunity.
The students would be chosen by their academic qualifications and, at that time, they are doing additional training on other languages and specific risks like nuclear energy o dangerous products. The activities to do during the internships would be the established measures at the curriculum of the internships. For example, intervening in emergencies, controlling procedures and using resources, rescuing victims…
We have contacted CERN (Safety and Environmental protection unit) and have created a team for this Program. Our students are preparing their interviews and the selection process doing different courses and learning English and French. Then, we will keep in contact the tutor in CERN and we will do the activities program. At the end of the internships, the program will be assessed and we will do some improvement proposals for the following years.
The impacts of this Erasmus Project are:
1.- Impact on IES Frances de Aranda as a institution: The internships in European companies are extended to all the vocational training education in the school. Cooperation between the work and education is better. With this project, we are improving the quality of the education. Students, teachers and families get to know other cultures and they are able to move to other countries.
2.- Local and autonomic impact: It would be positive for all the education in Teruel. In our area, until now, the high schools have only participate in Erasmus + Program for Superior Education. Nowadays, there are a lot of Medium Vocational Training and a lot of students in them. So, we could expand our experiences to other high schools. With this possibility, the students can be motivated for their education and the school failure is reduced. Besides, their possibilities to find a job are increased. Teruel is a low populated crowded area and it is participating in European Programs like Leader, Proder, Urban… Education, investigation and innovation are essential to develop our economy. It is possible to correct some present economic problem and have a better situation.
3.- Impact on the students: They would improve their professional, personal and social skills. As well as professional knowledge, they are learning independence, teamwork, initiative and maturity. They have to open their minds towards new possibilities and they must deal with new business to get over their previous difficulties.
4.- Impact on the businesses in Spain: The Spanish companies would value our students better because of their added knowledge. Our students will know European enterprises, foreign languages, new methods, new technologies….
5.- Global impact: Vocational training is devaluated in Spain. Our labour market isn´t balanced. The society thinks that these studies are for bad students who aren´t able to study at University. It´s a mistake. With this European Program and with the other impacts, our vocational training would improve its image.
The result of this European Program is tangible and intangible. At a short-term, the students are obtaining a official certificate and improving their possibilities for a nearby future. At a medium or long term, they are developing their abilities for lasting and sustainable development in Europe.
