Motivating and Encouraging Young Adults to Learn

The 21st century is characterised by the on-going change from the industrial society to a“knowledge society”. The so-called “upskilling” of the employers and therewith the trendto higher qualification of employees is evident. The qualifications of employees areimportant so as to be able to compete on the European labour market. Therefore,employees in the future need a good basic education and level of competence to beable to access the job market as well as to participate in the process of lifelong learning.However, there are a large number of functional illiterates and people without anadequate education in Europe. Young adults especially who leave school without abasic formal diploma or certificate face disproportionately high levels of unemploymentand social exclusion. These young adults are also difficult to motivate to participate intraining and learning opportunities. The causes for that kind of learning resistance aremultifaceted. Thus the factors can be intrinsic as well as extrinsic.MoLeYa intends to create a “motivation-guide” which will include recommendations andstrategies on involving and motivating young adults with a lack of basic education.Further, it shall include strategies on how to help learners to learn. All information will begained through analyses and evaluation of learners who are facing illiteracy, the datafrom teachers and trainers in the field of illiteracy as well as experts, key persons andeducation centres in the partner countries. The “motivation-guide” will be published in alllanguages of the partnership. A further output of MoLeYa will be recommendations oflearning settings as well as the dissemination of learning opportunities. The highlight ofthe project will be the European meeting of trainers/ teachers in the field of illiteracywhich will take place at the end. This will provide a good opportunity to exchange knowhowand work experience as well as a means to raise public awareness of illiteracy.The impact of MoLeYa is to inform/ raise awareness of the reasons and the effects ofthe challenging learning behaviour and motivation problems of (young) learners facingilliteracy. Further, the project intends to improve the networks betweentrainers/teachers, key persons, social supporting centres as well as education centresand learners on a regional level.
