motion of Food International Trade through cross-border collaboration (Pro-FIT)
Start date: Sep 30, 2008, End date: May 31, 2010 PROJECT  FINISHED

Food and Drink (F&D) industry is one of the backbones of the EU economy and has become even more important as the EU enlargement progresses. This sector has a turnover of 870 billion Euros (14% of the manufacturing sectors total). With a workforce of 4 million, it is the leading European employer in the manufacturing sector (CIAA 2006) Yet, the importance of this sector to Europe is much greater than its significant economic value. It is an essential element of cultural identity. But EU food and drink total import has risen considerably. Finnish F&D profits from cutting edge R&D on food and nutrition and produces a large scale of health foods with important export potential as product from Nordic area. The Estonian companies are economically highly dynamic and have potential to quality raw material. Cross-border collaboration may optimise F&D strength and create economical development in the area. But 99% of the EU F&D companies are of small and medium category (SME) that need help to identify markets, consumer needs and desires, develop products or solve food international logistics. Pro-FIT is a new, unique cross-border joint development project prepared by Finnish and Estonian experts (Laurea, TFTAK, FINPRO, FINTRA, FINFOOD, University of Helsinki Palmenia, MTT Agrifood Research, Oy Nutrinet Ltd, Jääsaukko Oy and Capwell Oy). The need for Pro-FIT is clearly expressed by experts and authorities (e.g. Suomalaisen ruoan edistämisohjelma 30.6.08; Elintarvikepäivät 05/2008; FITIM-project press conference 01/2008). Pro-FIT has Finnish - Estonian joint implementation, financing and staffing. Through cross-border collaboration Pro-FIT develops a joint solution to help SMEs gain foreign market entries and develop food international trade under the joint marketing label of Nordic food. Thus Pro-FIT enhances economical development and competitiveness in Southern Finland and Estonia, and co-operation and partnership of relevant Finnish and Estonian experts, universities research and development centres optimises strength and creates a sound basis necessary training, for transmission of information, support and technical assistance to F&D SMEs and develops F&D cluster cross-border collaboration. Sustainability of Pro-FIT in collaboration with relevant interest groups, authorities and universities/R&D is an integral part of the project. Achievements: Pro-FIT supported food and drink (F&D) SMEs to gain foreign market entries and develop international trade. Pro-FIT offered a targeted flow of information on international trade and marketing in seminars. The active participation of F&D SMEs brought insight regarding their needs and learning possibilities, enabling the project to develop and test a targeted training program for F&D SMEs on international trade and marketing. By developing a sensory laboratory, the project transmitted expertise in testing to participating SMEs. The partners refined and collected information in data banks helping companies to find information and expertise for developing products for international markets.
