JointWaterS aims to promote joint action within the transbountary River Basin of Aoos/Vjosa, in cooperation with the overall national authorities on the matter in Greece and Albania. The objectives of the project are: - promote cross-border communication and improvement of knowledge regarding the requirements of WFD, - ensure that common ground between the two countries is achieved through the implementation of WFD provisions on the Albanian part of Aoos/Vjosa River Basin, - jointly design a water monitoring network/program, covering the needs and demands of both countries, with emphasis on the investigation of fishfauna populations decline in the wider region, - jointly implement the monitoring program - raise awareness of selected target groups on sustainable water management and ensure communication and cooperation among partners and among stakeholders of both countries.All activities will be carried out in the cross-border program area and will be completely harmonized with EU/national water policies. The equipment installed will offer the appropriate bases for long-term coordination of action in the common River Basin. Expected Results: The overall expected result, arising from the project objectives is the contribution to the improvement of cross-border links regarding communication, cooperation, knowledge and joint action on water monitoring, management and protection. Specifically, the expected results of the project are:1. Role of the EU and of the project partners in the monitoring, management and protection of the water resources of the project area recognized. 2. Cross-border communication among partners and among stakeholders of both countries established and awareness of the general public regarding sustainable water management raised. 3. Cross-border cooperation among the project competent authorities of the two sides of Aoos/Vjosa River Basin improved.4. Capacity of the competent authorities and other relevant stakeholders (i.e. water managers, experts etc.), regarding the requirements and provisions for the implementation of the WFD, build.5. Joint monitoring network/program, covering the needs and demands of both countries, developed and subsequently implemented (based on 6-months sampling). Further to that, telemetric equipment for the automatic measurement of physicochemical and hydro-morphological quality elements in both countries established. 6. Conclusions regarding the ecological status of surface waters in the Aoos/Vjosa River Basin drawn. 7. Issue regarding the decline of fishfauna populations in the Aoos/Vjosa River Basin investigated in a joint manner. Proposals for possible solutions drafted.
