More vigorous children and youths (FABU)
Start date: Mar 31, 2002, End date: Mar 30, 2005 PROJECT  FINISHED

– I am totally enthralled by this project.Nils-Ivar Odelberg in Gäddede SK has only praise to comment the FABU project and the sports collaboration across the national border. With some 150 – 200 km to the regional centre in Strömsund, the inhabitants of Frostviken have since time immemorial nourished the contacts with their good neighbours to the west. In the FABU project, these ties have become even stronger between boys and girls, parents and teachers and all the others who are involved in the sports movement. – The project has not only enriched the sports movement, the quality of our social lives has improved as well. The voices from others involved are unanimous. – We have so many good things to tell.We have learnt a lot from the Norwegians just as they have from us. This has resulted in a leverage effect where we develop together, says Maria Norling at J/H Idrottsförbund, project leader of FABU. One of the fundamental thoughts behind the FABU project is to improve the health of children and youths on both sides of the border and promote a life-long interest in physical activities.FABU can demonstrate a suite of good results. One example is the Swedish model with school sports associations that has been given a lot of attention and introduced in Norwegian schools. The Swedes have been greatly impressed by the Norwegians’ substantial knowledge of children’s sports and a broad spectre of physical activities, where dancing and outdoor life have their given place. – We’ve had ideas for creating more playful sports activities than we are used to. The Norwegians are more relaxed and impulsive in this context whereas we want to do things correctly and in the proper way. They have also produced a joint plan for children’s sports for 6 to 12 year olds and one for those aged 12 to 25 years. – These are guidelines and the idea is to establish them in sports associations and clubs and to have them posted in sports halls. They should be regarded as tools and provoke curiosity among leaders and athletes while the parents should be invited to pose questions, says Maria. The transnational sports collaboration between the schools is now established and the network of sports leaders will continue.
