Tampereen lyseon lukio high school is not only a regular Finnish upper secondary school but also has two special programmes: one for the European studies where the emphasis lies in internationality and social studies and the other for the IB programme where the students take the International IB diploma examination. We have students who speak only English and our school also often gets visiting groups from different foreign countries. Internationalism and learning about foreign cultures is included in our school’s curriculum. Two languages, Finnish and English, are needed in Tampereen lyseon lukio’s daily life. The aim of this project is to improve our staff’s foreign language skills.
In addition, the aim of the Finnish upper secondary school curriculum reform in our school is to develop project type of learning using ITC and CLIL. For this purpose, several teachers need training in the use of ICT in education, refreshing their language skills and education in Content and Language Integrated Learning. Among the goals of this projects are also finding inspiration for diversifying lesson plans as well as international networking. When enquired, 12 of our school’s teachers feel the need and motivation for professional development in these areas.
In the next two years the teachers will take part in international educational courses. As a result, the teachers’ foreign language skills will be improved and the quality of the teaching they offer in a foreign language will rise. Communication between school and multicultural, non-Finnish families will also be facilitated.
In addition, our school is going to develop new ICT-enhanced study programs where several different subject teachers work together. In these programs teaching and studying will take place partly or completely in English or in some other foreign language and there will also be international projects with our friendship schools or other instances. Experience and examples will be shared with other upper secondary schools in Tampere region.
