PROJECT
FINISHED
Being involved in vocational education our school follows the changes of the market to determine the direction and fields of development. As the number of building investments has been decreasing but a larger demand on renovation and modernization has been shown, our institution focused its mobility projects on this area. Our first project which promoted and was starting this summer was a staff mobility programme concentrating on energy efficient restoration of historical buildings. As a follow-up project of our staff mobility we would like to make our apprentices familiar with these techniques in the frame of a three week student mobility programme. The focus has been expanded, it was not restricted on historical buildings any more, students could learn about materials and technologies applied for restoration and modernization of old buildings. Complex knowledge is required for demolition, reconstruction and dismantling works which corresponds to the objectives of the practical training of second year students. The project’s period was from 1st September 2014 to 31st August 2015 and we did the mobility from 13th June 2015 to 04nd July 2015 since it was still school time in Germany, so students could profit from a visit at education institutions and training centres. The apprentices spent their training at different enterprises; they worked seven hours a day for five days because they were minors. For the weekends we planned cultural excursions and free-time activities.
Supported by a teacher and instructors 12 apprentices in the professions joiner, carpenter, bricklayer and building engineer could take part in the training. The participating students would have finished the second year of vocational training by the time of the mobility where they could gain skills and experience necessary for their further education and their success in professional competitions. With these students the dissemination of the project results could be more effective. Our joiner trainees were performing builders’ joinery (doors and windows, stairs), building engineers were reconstructing and modernizing heating and drainage systems, carpenters scaffolding, insulation and reconstruction work, painters were repairing and repainting damaged walls, doors and windows besides painting of ornaments, while bricklayers activating their knowledge were building pillars, arches and chimneys. In order to work and communicate effectively our students had preparatory lessons in practical subjects and German and they participated in trainings strengthening team work supplying them with cultural information they needed during the mobility. We expected from the German exchange of experience that our trainees learnt new technologies; they used new materials and they were be able to apply them. They could also learn how to organise work.
As the participants were under age they required tutoring and supportation during their stay. Therefore an educator and a translator helped the students with their professional tasks and communication difficulties. As a short time result we expected the development of our students’ social, practical and language skills, the reinforcement of the importance of language learning.
The project could provide breakout for disadvantaged students who cannot enjoy the support of their families. Their participation contributed to the development of their independence, responsibility, cooperation and tolerance.
Our students could highly benefit in each profession from the experience of the mobility since their new experience and their freshly acquired knowledge could affect their attitude to work and self-respect positively. The project was a great opportunity to make vocational training more attractive among young people which is one of the European Union’s development priorities. With appropriate dissemination we could ensure our school’s position and popularity for long term and we could contribute to appreciation of vocational training and manual work. With the help of a supported project we could train highly skilled workers who are able to perform work of high standards in Hungary or even abroad.
