The project’s main objective is to identify and analyse examples of excellence that demonstrate sustainable and cost-effective large scale e-learning.In the field of e-learning is disturbing to note how many iniatives fail to achieve critical mass and wither and die away. The most evident mega trend in international e-learning today is the development from small-scale experiments to large scale operations. To achieve this, the Megatrend project will seek to identify the megatrends, the rules for achieving critical mass in e-learning, for moving from a small scale fragile e-learning provider, to a large scale permanent and succesful e-learning institution.Trends towards succesful mega systems are: high competence in both distance education and information technology; enthousiastic employees who believe firmly in on line education; standard and widely-used technologies; widely-used technologies enable students to apply the software and hardware they have at their disposal with little need to buy additional equipement;cost effective courses; continuous researgh and evaluation; flexibility to adapt to the changing market; collaboration with other educational institutions and the public administration; evollutionary development and effective administrative systems. The Megatrend project will take a four-tier methodology approach of Surveys,Analyses, Evaluations And recommendations. It will apply qualitative research methods including hypothsis and theory, case studies, interviews and comparative analyses.
