The overall objective of MESST project is the development of a standard on sustainable tourism for application in tourism destinations and enterprises in all the business cycle of tourism activity. The project will facilitate joint action among partners in view of: • Increasing the environmental responsibility of tourism enterprises • Increasing the capacity of local administration on monitoring sustainable tourism • Creating a transnational network of shared planning and management policies for sustainable tourism • Exchanging best practices and knowledge in the field of sustainable tourism MESST project has been elaborated on the basis of participatory procedures that have started with the circulation of a draft proposal indicating the need for a common approach to the future of tourism in the Mediterranean. The partners have agreed on the creation of a standard that will set common criteria for the development and evaluation of tourism, while at the same time promoting the particularities and comparative advantages of each one of the participating areas. Expected Results: 1. A situation analysis on the business attitude towards sustainable tourism in the project areas 2. A detailed methodology for designing and implementing a standard for sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean basin 3. Establishment of a Mediterranean charter for issuing of sustainable tourism certificates
