Research indicates that Deaf people appear to be less healthy than hearing people and do not get proper access to health services. A number of issues are important to consider when examining the Doctor-deaf patient relationship. These include the medic’s knowledge of Deaf culture, the use of an interpreter, the level of literacy of the deaf patient. the time the medic gives to the patient, and how much of the deaf patient’s medical problem the medic understands. Smeijers and Pfau’s (2009) survey showed that while the majority of GPs were confident in correctly diagnosing a Deaf patient, the research indicated that in over 50% of the deaf respondent’s comments, the GP did not understand the question presenting serious concerns for misdiagnosis and treatment. MEDISIGNS will transfer a traditionally taught course at the Centre for Deaf Studies called Liaison Interpreting (already accredited), to an online resource called Interpreting in Medical Contexts. At present this is delivered face-to-face to students studying to qualify as interpreters. MEDISIGNS content will be digitised so that the course can be accessed using MOODLE to include: pre-recorded video lectures. In addition, content that is already available will be contextualized and updated (i.e Medical setting role plays).
