PROJECT
FINISHED
The Youth Exchange “MASTER SCENE: theatre against discrimination!” will promote human rights, namely gender equality, fighting against discrimination and xenophobia. Mainly through theatre, the participants will be involved in a safe atmosphere of intercultural learning where they can interact and cooperate with the common goal of participation and sharing their cultures and experiences.
This project will be developed by 4 EuroMed partner countries (Portugal, Greece, Tunisia and Egypt) and will take place in Amarante (Portugal) during 10 days, from 02/08/2015 till 11/08/2015. It will gather in a balanced way (gender and countries) 24 participants (6 per country), aged between 18-25, and 4 youth leaders (2 from Program Countries and 2 from Mediterranean Partner Countries). It ill also have a Advanced Planning Visit with all youth leaders from 26th till 29th june 2015 (travel days included) in Amarante.
The main objectives are: foster the values of solidarity and mutual understanding between young people from different cultures; develop creativity and sense of initiative in non-formal artistic contexts (theatre); raise awareness/involve the local community by promoting active participation, intercultural learning and citizenship; raise the spirit of cooperation among youngsters and between them and the community.
Main activities and methods: during this Youth Exchange the participants will develop several activities of Non Formal Education (NFE) that will make them understand the differences and similarities between young people that live in Europe and North Africa. We will use some activities of COMPASS (human rights education) in order to raise the discussion and reflection on topics such as gender equality, discrimination and xenophobia, freedom of expression, etc. Theatre will be the main tool used throughout the Activity as we believe it is a powerful mean of creating bonds between people and pass a message to the entire community (local and tourists). We will create an interesting and cooperative environment to pass the thematic values of this Youth Exchange and to bring young people together, sharing and knowing each other better.
As we did with success in previous projects, one of the activities will be to share and taste the different food proposals from EuroMed countries - the Euromed Food Day will be an open event for the locals in Casa da Juventude de Amarante (youth center).
Results and impact: we expect this Activity to create a new attitude and citizenship of young people towards Human Rights (namely discrimination) becoming active members of their societies promoting solidarity and equal opportunities for all. In this way young people can understand their role in society and use NFE methodologies (such as theatre) to drive their own ideas, social needs and values to raise among community. The impact that this project seeks to create both in the participants and in the local community is great for the theme of discrimination (still a quite hidden issue in small and conservative cities like Amarante) as well as the methods used (NFE activities, theatre, visits, simulations and outdoor activities, etc.) that allows a great interaction within the group of participants and the community. This approach encourages youngsters to be more innovative/creative, thus transforming their way of thinking and perceiving reality, passing it to the community.
