Manage Your Career- Methodology and Training: Empowerment through the identification, recognition and utilisation of Informal, Non-formal and Formal Learning

The Manage Your Career partnership developed a methodology that aims to assist guidance practitioners across Europe in the empowerment of job seekers. The Council Resolution on better integrating lifelong guidance into lifelong learning strategies (Nov, 2008) encourages the 'Lifelong Acquisition of Career Management Skills' and outlines that ‘Career Management Skills play a decisive role in empowering people to become involved in shaping their learning, training and integration pathways and their careers. These skills include 'being able to evaluate oneself, knowing oneself and being able to describe the competencies one has acquired in formal, informal and non formal education settings;’ Although there are now tools available to use in the guidance process which assist in the identification of these skills, the methodologies used by practitioners are varied. The ‘Manage your Career’ partnership have further developed work undertaken in the development of Quality Guidance tools and the EGUIDE Quality Framework (LdV project EGUIDE – IRE/05/B/F/PP – 153103) specifically for disadvantaged groups by developing a Manage Your Skills programme. The Partnership have developed: 1. A Career Management Skills methodology specifically aimed at guidance for disadvantaged job seekers (Framework of 10 Career Management Competencies and Checklist for practical application of the method)2. A one-day training for practitioners on incorporating this methodology into their practice. The partnership consists of organisations working with disadvantaged job seekers in a guidance and support capacity, organisations overseeing the delivery of VET, a city council, a chamber of commerce, a university and a social research consultancy. The organisations are based in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Austria, Hungary and Spain.
