Making a difference
Start date: May 4, 2015, End date: May 3, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project "Making a difference" focuses on the impact that incoming volunteers can have on the local community and the volunteer him/herself. Each person can make difference in this world and we hope that through their voluntary activity the participants will impact the lives of the people they meet and their own in the process. The activities planned for this project focuses on working with people, to communicate, empathize, to work through differences and various barriers the some of the people using the services of the host placements face. The volunteers will learn to work with various groups, find meaning and joy in the tasks they take on. The aim is that the volunteers integrate into the community through the host placements and various other activities offered by the host and co-ordinating organisation AUS. This cultivates the skills of each volunteer to the benefit of the community he/she works for. As this is a 12 months long term EVS project the volunteers will undoubtedly enrich the communities they serve and have a positive impact on their own development and the people they work with. The volunteers chosen for this project all showed a great enthusiasm to volunteer in the various host placements. It was important that they were open to a new culture, were willing to integrate and were interested in the work of the host placement they applied for. The volunteers in this project are nine and will be going to seven projects. These projects are: AUS Office – one volunteer from Serbia, Milos Stankis. We felt that his enthusiasm, willingness to learn Icelandic and the possibility for him to gain a valuable experience through AUS made the choice easy. The Salvation Army – one volunteer from Austria, Daniel Schattauer. Daniel is particularly interested in working in a social area and hopes to be able work in the field in the future. He is open minded and flexible and keen to take this experience as he struggles with economic and social obstacles back home. Geysir Clubhouse – one volunteer from Italy, Alessandro Bruno. He has experience in working with mentally ill people and wants to continue working in this field after his EVS. Waldorf Marargata – one volunteer from France, Amandine Brie. She is from France is very keen on working with children and using her artistic skills while doing so. She shows a great motivation and has experience working with children which she absolutely loves. Waldorf Grundarstígur – one volunteer from Germany, Elisabeth Winkler. She is particularly interested in the Waldorf philosophy and wants to become a teacher. She is friendly, cheerful and likes to keep busy with various interests. The Red Cross in Reykjavík – two volunteers from the British Red Cross, United Kingdom. The RC in Reykjavík is keen on having a volunteer via the Red Cross to share experience, learn new things and ultimately give a young person an opportunity to try their skills and gain new learning methods and grow. Grund – two volunteers from Germany and France: Pauline Deschamps from France showed an interest in the working with the elderly through their social and health related activities. She is artistic, open minded, patient and kind which makes her an ideal candidate for Grund. Emily Rinderknecht is from Germany and has worked with the elderly in her home country. She has musical knowledge she can use during the assembly with elderly and is looking forward to interacting with the elderly of Iceland and finds ways to talk to them and occupy with various activities. We foresee that the main impact will be on the volunteers themselves and the people they work with through their host placements. When partaking in a long term project like this you will touch the lives of the people you work with and your own life, as a volunteer, will also change. Lasting friendships will be made and the long term overall impact will be on the people themselves.
