The project "Make them smile!" has the following theme: to promote young people's active citizenship and the European citizenship in particular, to develop solidarity and promote tolerance among young people, in order to enhance the social cohesion within the European Union. The project will take place at the General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection District 1, Bucharest, Romania.The main object is to promote young people's active citizenship and the European citizenship, by the participation of volunteers at the active life in the local community of District 1. There is a number of 8 volunteers involved and the period of the volunteering stage is of 10 months, from October 2010 until July 2011. The role of the European volunteer is to get involved in social and leisure activities with children and adult persons with disabilities (mental, physical, psychic) from the day centre, residential and unit type families within our institution. Upon the arrival in Romania, the volunteer will be trained at the General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection and he/she will attend Romanian language classes. The countries involved in our project are: Germany, Italy, Spain, and Turkey. In this project, the main used methods are: informal learning, participative and non-participative observation.The General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection, District 1, Bucharest, Romania has submitted for the first time a project within the European Volunteering Programme, and, to that effect, our experience is derived from the collaboration with ACTOR Association on the project "Playing is a serious job!" The European volunteer represents a plus for our beneficiaries and institution.
