PROJECT
FINISHED
Based on the diagnosis of the school reality, we conclude that the students’ educational success is very much conditioned by their weaknesses in different areas of literacy – reading, mathematics and science. Addressing this problem should go through the adoption of innovative methodologies in order to ensure an interdisciplinary approach and a European dimension of learning and teaching. Aware of this reality, the search for training courses was guided by a thorough selection in order to respond to the issues relating the priority areas, namely: Literacy (in the fields of reading, mathematics and science), ICT (as innovative tools to improve learning) and knowledge of the English language as a primary means of communication in Europe. In order to face the identified difficulties we defined the following objectives: develop the teachers’ professional skills in the implementation of innovative pedagogical methodologies; set up networks aiming the internationalization of the school; develop linguistic proficiency (both in mother tongue and foreign language); provide students with skills which will allow them to interact at a European level, in linguistic, scientific and cultural fields, to promote a European citizen in each student; prepare the students for a full integration into active life; increase the levels of Literacy; reduce school failure and the risk of dropping out.The candidates must meet the criteria defined for their selection, namely: the subject(s) they teach and the connection with the selected course, the number of national and international projects the candidate coordinated, the number of national and international projects in which he/she participated, the number of activities of the Annual School Plan (ASP) he/she coordinated and/or he/she participated. The careful selection of the 16 teachers (different grades) ensures that all learning acquired in mobility will be implemented with their students. A comparative study will be held between the results of these students (experimental group) and the students of a control group in order to assess the project development. These teachers will have a key role in the project through collaborative work among themselves, to prepare the activities outlined in the project, of sharing of materials and applying the instruments to their students. The activities to be developed will be: participation in the training courses (mobilities), production of teaching materials, contests, interdisciplinary classes, work meetings, workshops, design, application and study of questionnaires, participation in forums (e-Twinning), the elaboration and publishing of an e-book (with project materials and ISBN registration) and a training accredited course for teachers. Both the e-book and the course will be in partnership with the Training Teachers Association Centre of Braga Sul (TTAC-BS).All the design, development, validation and follow-up of the project will be supervised by the Project Team of the school, in collaboration both with the School Board and the TTAC-BS. This is a guarantee of a systematic monitoring of the various planned stages. It is also of their responsibility the evaluation of the activities. The dissemination of the project will be done through meetings, the public communication in the local media, the use of the School Web page, the e-book and a training accredited course for teachers by Conselho Científico Pedagógico de Formação Contínua da UMinho in a partnership with the TTAC-BS. Concerning the results, we expect: improvement of the students’ skills in the areas of Literacy and that these may lead to a better learning and subsequent educational success and/or reduction of school dropout; creation of procedures and routines of training and measurement of the Literacy; implementation of innovative teaching practices in the classroom and in other school activities, aiming the internationalization of the school as well; publishing of the e-book through the sharing of the acquired knowledge and skills among peers. The impact and the potential longer term benefits of the project , are expected in the teachers involved, in the participating students, in the school organization and in the community. The result will be a regular practice in a disciplinary and interdisciplinary work based on a previous solid training, on the sharing of the knowledge acquired as well as on the preparation of the dissemination activities. It will contribute to lifelong learning skills and generate new ways of empowering peers and future generations. We believe the outcome of the project “Literacy +: From my school I read the World” (+ Literacia: Da Minha Escola Leio o Mundo) will enhance the students’ levels of literacy, prevent the school failure and dropout. Thus, the student’s knowledge will not only be restricted to the passive study but will also extend beyond the school borders enabling him/her to READ THE WORLD.
