The Charter and the ECHR have changed the national scenario in the field of fundamental rights. National constitutional law shall now be understood in light of the impact of these European sources. Moreover, these two normative tools provide new room for bolstering the role of European judges -CJEU, ECrtHR and national judges- and determine the interaction between them. The European space of protection of fundamental rights is an important phenomenon for national constitutionalism.This Jean Monnet Chair proposal aims at reformulating the official curriculum of the Faculty of Law of University Pompeu Fabra to include the teaching of the impact of the Charter and the ECHR on national constitutional law and promote a better understanding of this subject-matter by students. Thanks to a previous Jean Monnet Chair ad personam, the constitutional law subjects in the Law degree were partially adapted to the European studies from the standpoint of the institutional framework. The current proposal aims at completing this reconceptualization in the field of fundamental rights.Moreover, the annual additional activities will complement this modernization of the curriculum following up the research agenda on European studies and fundamental rights. The three annual events and the academic book will be a contribution to the European studies on the Charter and the ECHR and the role of European judges. Both the modernization of the curriculum and the events will enhance the opportunities of undergraduate and postgraduate students to engage in European studies. The events will serve to spread European studies between young scholars, policymakers, NGOs and legal practioners (judges, prosecutors and lawyers). The ultimate goal is that all these groups, with their own perspectives and experiences, will be engaged in the debate on the role of the Charter and the ECHR and the transformation of national constitutional law in the field of fundamental rights.
