Linking European, African and Asia Academic Networks on Climate Change
Start date: Sep 1, 2011,

The debate on climate change and global warming has been taking place around the world. There Is now, however, a clear realization of the seriousness of climate change and an agreement that climate change must be dealt with. The debate revolves to a great extent around whether climate change has natural or human-made causes, and around the scale and nature of the consequences of climate change. The debate has led to a series of different responses; these include 1) non-action of those who lack the proper knowledge and resources; 2) mitigation strategies to slow-down or lessen carbon emissions and incidence of green house gases; and, 3) adaptation strategies for those who are preparing for or experiencing the destructive consequences of climate change e.g. global warming, flooding, drought, and rising sea levels in coastal areas. This Erasmus Mundus 3 (EM3) programme provides a key opportunity to intensify the promotion, development and dissemination of a higher education curriculum on climate change and adaptation, with the endeavor to being able to apply this to contexts around the world. This EM3 programme calls for a collaboration with other EU based partners as well as non-EU partners, notably in the Global South. To this end we have put together a consortium of both academic and more technical institutions, each with complementary and high quality educational programmes. The choice of partners reflects the need to link theory and applied, practical knowledge on the climate change - adaptation nexus (in both a rural and urban context). The partners understand that the project is intended to allow EU higher education institutions to promote EU HE and their programs, knowledge and skills and ultimately increase enrolment. However, looking from the perspective of the students (our ultimate target group) in Non-EU countries, the partners have formed the following objectives for the project. Enhancing dissemination of knowledge towards improving awareness of climate change issues across different sectors and actors within Non - EU countries of the partner HEIs Gaining knowledge and improving access to academic programmes within EU HEIs that fit clearly with non – EU countries’ needs, South-North and South-South sharing of knowledge and capacity enhancement through information exchange, e-platform, real-time seminars, conferences and development of a pilot e-course . Activities of the project involve: -the development of an e-platform, -the execution of promotional seminars and substantive conferences, and -the development, marketing and execution of an е-course on climate change. Erasmus Mundus Action 3: Promotion of higher education The seminars are expressly being held in Indonesia, the Philippines and South Africa to ensure participation of scholars and students of Higher Education in these countries and/or the surrounding regions. The exchanges, during specific face to face meetings and through the е-portal allow for a necessary exchange of perspectives and insights, removing an artificial barrier between discussions on climate change mitigation and adaptation in the Global South and in the Global North. These debates on the direction of the climate change -adaptation nexus will feed into our own education (and research) at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels, thereby also achieving higher levels of interdisciplinary cooperation. The outputs of the project will be: One e-platform, up and running and used by all participants, statistics on the usage of the platform One е-course, of the 3 modules, developed, marketed and piloted Two conferences and two promotional seminars held and well attended. The results of the project will be disseminated on the е-platform, and through other electronic media (links to partner websites, student portals and newsletters of partner institutions).
