Life, Media and Participation - Youth in Baltic Sea Region

162 young people from 4 different countries with diverse backgrounds will be encouraged and enabled to set up their own promotion campaign on youth participation in society. They will address their peers on local and European level motivating them to use their full potential as active citizen in the society they live in. “What is it like to be young and live in the Baltic Sea Region? How does democracy work practically in the EU? How can I participate and contribute to shaping the region as attarctive place to live and work?” – these and other questions will be discussed and creatively answered by the young particiapants. They will plan and perform their own promotion campaign by using photography, film, posters, the web and other media, supported by media experts.Themes: Lifestyles, subcultures and attitudes in democractic processes: How does democractic life work in different cities & countries and how can we influence it? (working title)Objectives: • Experience exchange among youth from different cities in the Baltic Sea Region about their lifestyles, subcultures and attitudes towards inclusion in the democractic processes • raise youth awareness about the democratic life of the region they are living in• raise youth awareness about their possibilities to get engaged and participate in the democractic life of their communities• increase knowledge and skills of young people in how to start their own media campaign and make their voices heardActivities:• Intercultural workshop and local round tables on young lifestyles, subcultures and youth democracy combined with workshops on creative techniques• competition on youth campaigns in cities of the Baltic Sea• exhibition of campaigns in the cities & virtual Internet exhibitionDuration: 16 monthsInvolved partners:Tallinn Sports & Youth Department / Estonia; Kärdla Municipality / Estonia; Pärnu / Estonia; CultHus Guldborgsund Municipality / Denmark; Kolding / Denmark; Gävle Municipality / Sweden; Kulturhus Lätting / Sweden; Karlstad / Sweden; Education, Culture and Sports Department of Riga City Council / Latvia; Riga’s Pupils Council / LatviaProposed number of participants: 40 youth participants in intercultural meetings, 162 in local follow-up workshopsMethods:Creative competition / Non-formal learning environments: Intercultural interactive brainstorming workshop on youth engagement, participation & involvement in EU society / Round tables with politicians / Creative workshops & support on media use for promotion campaign / Young participants produce their campaign tool self-responsibly / Local exhibitions on developed campaign tools
