Life is Worth Living
Start date: Jan 5, 2015, End date: May 4, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

At the moment the Draft National Youth Policy Framework 2015-2020 is being discussed with all stakeholders involved in order to finalise the National Youth Policy for the coming years. As the document states, 'for any policy to be effective and successful it must be owned by all those concerned. The designers need to work closely with those that will implement the policy and these must in turn, take into acount the impact of the policy will have on the end user.' Since our area of concern, as members of the Malta Medical Students Association (MMSA), is in the medical sector, we will give our contribution with the aim of increasing the healthy lifestyles of youth. The project focuses on the prospect of a healthy life and hence, the 6-day Healthfest event is aptly correlated to the general title chosen for this project: Life is Worth Living. The project will include a number of outreaching events to collect data on the healthy living and habits of youths, aged between 16 and 30 years. This will lead to the six-day seminar organised by medical students, which will seek to address the main health issues concerning the Maltese youth, while introducing other student organisations to participate in the dialogue. More than forty youths are expected to attend these sessions, who will have the chance to develop a hands-on opinion about the subject matter through the number of guest speakers, NGOs and government representatives invited every day during the 6-day event. Each day will see a different topic being raised: from substance abuse to alcohol abuse, youth pregnancies, sexual education, and mental health, with a final conclusive event which sums up all that was discussed throughout week-long seminar and physical activity. The aim of these seminars is to see the attendance of government representatives, influential professionals whose presence will ultimately lead to changes in the nation's policies on the subjects being discussed. Throughout this conference, and through the participation of the youth sector, MMSA seeks to empower the youth to voice their concerns on their health, no matter their age. We want to create the ideal atmosphere for discussion between all the participants, in order to foster a society based on mutual understanding and empathy towards one another, regardless of one's state of health. The final product of this four month project will be a document to be given to the Parliamentary Secretariat for Research, Innovation, Youths and Sports and the Ministry for Health. This document will contain facts and an analysis of the data collected by the members of MMSA, a short summary of the presentations and discussions held during the seminars and the policy recommendations forwarded during the discussions held during the Healthfest.
