"Let’s get youth Up & Running" was a training course for developing basic youth work competences. It was for members of youth organisations who wanted to learn more about being a youth worker, and engage with the young people they work with in active participation – both in youth work itself and in society. Who wanted to develop a sense of citizenship with the young people, and to reach out to and work with young people with fewer opportunities from deprived urban areas and rural areas through developing a cross-sectorial approach to youth work in their community.
The objectives were:
- Develop participants’ competences in the profession of youth work;
- Gain understanding on how to identify the needs of young people;
- Develop strategies to engage young people in active participation;
- Develop an understanding of citizenship – local and European;
- Develop competencies for working towards inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities;
- Explore the advantages of a cross-sectorial approach to youth work.
The training course took place in Armenia, December 15-21, 2015 and hosting 28 youth workers from the Netherlands, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, Romania, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, and Moldova. The project was organized by the informal group "LIVE N8W" from the Netherlands with support of partner organisation “Loesje Armenia”.
Participants have explored the definition of youth work, its policies and context in the countries involved. They have learned about youth worker competencies and practiced these throughout the programme: one-to-one work; group work; different learning styles; understanding adolescence; and more. In various teams the participant explored the use of different research techniques and have prepared, conducted and presented a community research in the local surrounding,.
The programme used non-formal education as the basis of learning, and learning to learn practices, lifelong and life wide learning. Methods were process and practice oriented. During the course participants developed action plans for their continued work in their organizations afterwards. And through daily learning groups they reflected on their learning and the development of their competences.
