Scoil Na Maighdine Mhuire is a mainstream co-ed primary school situated in Newmarket on Fergus, Co. Clare, a village with a population of approximately 1700. The close proximity of the village to Shannon airport (11km), Ennis (14km) and Limerick (24km) makes it an ideal location for families looking for a rural location close to an urban centre. In recent years there has been a significant increase in the enrolment of pupils going from 176 in 2006 to 206 in 2014. Amongst the increased enrolment are newcomer EAL children (English as an Additional Language) and SEN pupils (Special Education Needs). A significant percentage (9%) of our pupils have a diagnosed/registered disability, predominantly SLDC (Speech and Language Disorder/Impairment) or EBD (Emotional/Behavioural Disturbance) and 10% do not have English as their first language.
The downturn in the Irish economy in recent times has seen many families in straightened financial circumstances. These factors impact on the work of the school significantly and the Board of Management and Parents' council have fund raised tirelessly in recent years to provide much needed support to such disadvantaged pupils. We provide Speech and Language Screening, Occupational Therapy and play therapy at our school in an attempt to address the needs of the pupils in our school who are most at risk of not being able to achieve their full potential. Our early intervention strategy aims to ensure that every child is given every possible opportunity to learn and grow in an holistic environment thereby ensuring that they have the best possible chance of completing school and going on to further educational opportunities.
Our involvement in mobility activities will compliment the work already undertaken at the school by providing visual, aural and kinaesthetic learning opportunities to pupils with a variety of abilities and disabilities.
"Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today." (Malcolm X)
