LA COMPETENCIA COMUNICATIVA: ELEMENTO INTEGRADOR Y DE MEJORA. HACIA UNA ENSEÑANZA PLURILINGÜE
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project will be developed in the educational context of the IES Pando in Oviedo, a secondary school of about 700 students and the staff of 70 teachers. The school provides both compulsory and post-compulsory education, as well as training courses in the professional field of Graphic Arts. The students in the school display results in English language which are below the regional average. The school is especially interested in broadening expectations for its students in foreign countries covering as many potential areas as possible. Teacher training proves essential in such a situation, hence the concern that leads to presenting this project. The participants are mainly teachers related to non-linguistic backgrounds, who have been interested for some time in bilingual teaching, training mobility, educational innovation and the development of European projects. Eight courses have been applied for. Different criteria such as motivation to work in the project, a commitement to share both the things learned and the results obtained, to meet regularly, to set up a process of continuous assessment, to be member of the permanent school staff and to have a proven interest in the knowledge of foreign languages and their cultures will be considered when choosing the group members. It is our goal to involve as many school departments as possible. To travel abroad both availability and personal situation of the members of the project will be taken into consideration. The aim is to develop both communicative and linguistic competence as priority skills. Secondly, the purpose is also to improve methodologies in language teaching for non-linguistic fields, as well as developing positive approaches towards the utility and confidence of using the English language, and exchanging experiences with teachers from other countries. Specific courses for the improvement of English language and CLIL Methodology in countries where this is main language have been chosen for such purposes. The working method we have chosen to design, develop and continue the project is mainly cooperative and engaging. The results obtained at the school will be shared through both working groups and seminars. To ensure that the results of the experience are made known to the rest of the educational community, a blog will be set up where the teachers in the project can share and show their own experiences. A direct link to this blog will be available on both the school website and on all the teachers' resource centres. The expected impact is high. We hope to influence the entire teaching staff through their involvement in activities related to this project and about the educational environment. The short-term goal would be to implement bilingual teaching in the school with trained professionals for that purpose, leading to the achievement of a higher level in English for our students. We also aim to participate in student mobility projects. A long-term objective is to equip our students with skills and abilities to open borders. Two main ways will be used to share the project: an inner channel and an outer one. Inner channel: the project will be made known through different internal structures such as: the teaching staff; an educational coordination committee; school tutors' meetings; the school board; meetings of the bilingual teachers; and through specific activities and workshops. Outer channel: the project will be made known: on the school website; through the project's own blog; the "Oviedo Teachers Research Centre"; the local press; an eTwinning platform; blogs, Facebook; Twitter... The expected benefits are short and long term. A short-term improvement of linguistic competence reverts to the participants, in the center and students. In the long run, insert these new methodologies and resources in the life of the center is to improve the skills of our students and enhance their motivation. The ultimate goal is to achieve a significant improvement in their skills, in his notes of PAU and its concept of citizenship, the European Union and lifelong learning.
