The aim of the project „Acquiring practical skills in German kitchen” is to support the students in vocational education in gaining new knowledge, skills and qualification. Besides acquiring vocational skills it is also important to develop not only students’ attitudes and values necessary for successful personal and working life but also their enterprising spirit, creativity and openness to innovation. Through the project students will become familiar with a new culture and get an experience that they would not get via school curricula. The target group of the project consists of 2nd- and 3rd-year students of the cook and catering cook vocation of Väike-Maarja Training Centre. Students are aged 16 to 20. All students have started their vocational studies after graduating from basic school and are acquiring secondary education together with vocational education. 30% of the students have graduated basic school according to a simplified curricula. Over two years 12 2nd- and 3rd-year cook students (including 6 students with special educational needs) from Väike-Maarja Training Centre will be sent to practical training in Germany, Schwerin. During company’s specialty practice cooks will practice customer service, catering and practical kitchen work. In order to apply for the practical training all applicants will write a letter of application and a letter of motivation. The training group will be compiled according to study results, level of foreign language skills and motivation to implement them, social skills and motivation. The project is coordinated and led by Väike-Maarja Training Centre. Väike-Maarja Training Centre will organize the preparatory activities, including a 35-hour course in German also actions connected to travelling, e.g. insurance, tickets and transport in Estonia. The project partner, SALO+PARTNER Berufliche Bildung GmbH, organizes the training in Schwerin, including accommodation, catering, orienteering in the town and will support the students throughout the practical training. They will also be responsible for the transport in Schwerin. A contract will be signed which will enact the responsibilities and rights of the parties. SALO will finance the transport from Hamburg to Schwerin, the organization of a course introducing the European Union and an excursion. Each participant will be issued a certificate of the skills acquired through the practical training (Salo+ Partner Berufliche Bildung GmbH Certificate). As a result of the project 12 cook students of Väike-Maarja Training Centre will have participated in the vocational practical training in Germany and have acquired the skills set in the curricula. They have also acquired social skills necessary for working in a different cultural and linguistic environment. The school will have a partner with whom organizing practical training on other fields and teacher training will be continued. In the long run, the possibility for students to participate in a practical training abroad will raise the reputation of vocational education and make studying in a vocational school more popular for basic school graduates. Training and gaining experiences in different countries will homogenize the vocational skills all over Europe.
