Know the way- go the way- show the way
Start date: May 1, 2015, End date: Apr 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

With the training course "Know the way- go the way- show the way", the applicant and the partners want to have a positive impact on society by changing young people's lives for the better. The main issues we want to address are youth unemployment and capacity building of the youth organisations. This training course aims to develop youth leadership as a way to: a. improve the professional and life skills of the individual participants and b. to support the capacity building of the partner organisations. The youth unemployment rate in the European Union in October 2014 was 21.6 % which interprets into 4.983 million unemployed young people. With more than a quarter of European employers struggling to fill vacancies (according to a research published by McKinsey management consultants in early 2014) there is a big pressure for young people to be job-ready and able to perform in a job from day one. The lack of experience of paid work limits the development of key employability skills and soft skills including self-motivation, time management and communication skills. Youth organisations offer opportunities for skills development that young people might not get otherwise. Having an active role in a youth organisation helps the young people to develop important personal and professional skills that might be transferred in any job they might choose. Leadership involves the development of a set of skills including team work, communication (speaking and presentation skills, starting meaningful conversations and active listening), decision making, time management, goal setting, motivation of one self and others, influence skills, facilitation of effective meetings, negotiation skills, coaching, future planning, and partnership building. It also creates positive skills and attitudes around active citizenship. The work of the non governmental organisations affects, directly and indirectly, the lives of the most vulnerable people in the society. It is therefore of great concern that many youth organisations are considered ineffective. The direct causes of underperformance are numerous: poor leadership, lack of skills, low engagement of the members, capacity gaps, weak youth participation, stagnant processes, outdated organisational models, and so on. With this Capacity Building training, the youth organisations involved will benefit from the enhancement of the leadership skills of the youth workers, youth leaders and current/potential board members who will participate in the course but also of those who work for the management of the whole project . The training course "Know the way- go the way- show the way" is an opportunity to develop leadership skills, knowledge and competencies through non‐formal education. 45 volunteers, youth workers, youth leaders, current or potential board/ council/ bureau members but also people who are in paid, elected or volunteer leadership positions from 14 countries will work together on their leadership skills in order to set personal and professional goals and have the self-confidence to carry them out, to guide others on a course of action, to influence their behavior, and show them the way. The non- formal participatory methods that will be utilized include simulation games, role play, plenary debates, interactive lectures, audio-visual presentations, brainstorming, small and large group discussions, self- assessment and more. All working activities will aim at fostering intercultural learning and exchange between participants from diverse backgrounds and young people with fewer opportunities. As a result of this educational activity, the participants will develop the skills needed in order to work more effectively within their organisations and to raise their opportunities in the job market. With their participation in this capacity-building training, the young people will be able to support their organisations, to multiply the impact of youth work, to raise the visibility of their projects and to contribute to the breaking of the vicious circle of unemployment.
