The "ASB gemeinnützige Gesellschaft für Kinder-, Jugend- und Familienhilfe im Havelland mbh" works towards family support and is parent-oriented according to the principles of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund which since 1888, has been operating in Germany according to its guiding theme "Our mission is to help".
Affiliated to this organisation is the host organisation of the project: the daycare centre "Tollhaus am Wald". The daycare centre caters for children from the age of 6 months onwards and is an important meeting place for their entire families even across generations: e.g. grandparents are invited to take part in activities with the children.
This longterm (12 months stay) children-oriented project for 1-2 volunteers at a time promotes young people`s informal language learning and multi-linguality and intercultural learning by involving young European volunteers in our local community of which the daycare centre is a focal point. Falkensee is a town directly bordering on the multicultural capital Berlin. And yet the locality of Falkensee with its approx.40 000 citizens registers less than 2.5% foreigners as reflected in the daycare centre.
To introduce cross-cultural and European aspects the institution runs a bilingual German-English programme for all children between 3 and 6 years of age. The EVS programme offers the chance to further cultural diversity and cross-cultural aspects of the kindergarten in a positive way, affecting volunteers, children, staff and families involved.
The volunteer is encouraged to take on an active role, e.g. develop projects through artwork, sports activities, music, etc or by supporting our efforts to establish a "drop-in" facility for internationally interested families open to the local community. It would be the only one available in our town. Depending on the interests of the volunteer the emphasis could alternatively be on working with youths in Falkensee that are in vocational training as the kindergarten's focal issue is training in this field of social work.
