Kicking Life into Classroom
Start date: Jan 1, 2010,
Lately, the incorporation of ICTs in education & training systems is becoming more & more important, allowing us to develop new approaches to learning, life and work. Furthermore, despite the increasing use of ICTs, it is strongly believed that our educational system has to shift from the traditional paradigm of teacher-directed learning to learner-centered curricula that promote the development of lifelong learners who can think critically, solve problems, be creative & collaborate at work (King,1996).The KLiC project by taking into account these aspects proposes an inquiry-based approach of science teaching pedagogy that bridges the gap between formal & informal education and brings science & scientific objects closer to the learners by engaging them in episodes of playful learning. The purpose of the KLiC project is to deepen the student's and adult learner's understanding of scientific concepts by effectively associate every day activities with scientific enquiry & experimentation, and strengthen their appreciation of scientific process & research. The KLiC project builds upon the work performed in the very successful e-TEN project, InLOT (www.inlot.eu) where a system of wearable intelligent sensors (acceleration, body temperature, heart & respiration rate sensors) embedded in everyday objects (t-shirt, ball, vest, arm/leg straps) has been developed, extensively tested & evaluated in UK, Greece & Austria with school students. In the framework of KLiC the consortium aims to expand the application to a wider target audience, namely to science teachers, university educators & students, young & adult (amateur) athletes and to implement sets of learning scenarios (demonstrators) tailored to the needs of the diverse groups of learners. The main outcome of the KLiC project is an inquiry-based structured set of guidelines on how learners can experience their everyday activities in the context of science experimentation enriched by a series of learning scenarios.
