We are a grammar school with more than a century-long tradition from a small town in the Vysočina Region. Students of our school regularly achieve significant success in both the sciences and the humanities and in language competence. Since we are aware of the quality of our students, we want our teachers to continually develop their own skills, innovate and enlarge their methodological approaches and contents of the curriculum in the context of European standards, with an emphasis on internationalization and computer literacy. We therefore decided to allow young teachers to develop their competence and skills in foreign language teaching so that they can disseminate it in the future. For this we exploit the help of the European Union program, which supports professional development of teachers working in secondary education. It is specifically the KA1 project that contributes to innovation and improvement of education at secondary schools. In this mobility project, the participants under the statutes of Erasmus Plus improve their foreign language skills, increase their awareness of other cultures and countries in the network of international contacts and gain a sense of European citizenship and European identity. This should also increase the attractiveness of our school so that it can beat the competition in this region. We try to strengthen our international dimension and attract and gain more international contacts for cooperation in future.
Four key foreign language teachers have been selected for this project, some of which for their short teaching experience, some for the reason of returning back to teaching after a long break due to maternity leave.
All the selected teachers proved a substantial interest in innovative teaching methods acquired from an international context from abroad. There is a unique opportunity for the teachers to improve their language skills in order to reach the language competence of a native speaker. We think that nowadays the demands on knowledge of languages is more challenging, and as the teachers should be regarded professionals in their field, it puts pressure on their lexical and linguistic expression in the classroom. This mobility project should provide the teachers with a unique opportunity to hear and learn and speak the language in its authentic form and context. There is a great interest of the participants to become familiar with and experience the culture and landscape of the country of which language they teach. That is not only for the complexity of knowledge, but mainly because this specific subject area is taught in school. The teachers must therefore know these in depth and from their own experience so that they can confidently pass it over to the students and also their colleagues.
The main goals of our project are: 1. Professional development of young language teachers.
2. Selected teachers to improve or regain knowledge of a foreign language at the level of C1-C2.
3. To apply the latest innovative methods for teaching the language.
4. The teachers to know cultural and geographical facts of English and German speaking countries in Europe in great depth.
5. To have a better chance to establish and facilitate further international cooperation.
6 To deepen European awareness of the teachers.
Teachers participating in the project will be confronted with other approaches, attitudes and thinking in the European sector, which will significantly enrich and contribute to the consolidation of the European identity.
7 To maximize competitiveness of our local grammar school. The main benefits and impacts of the project are the progress of young teachers in their professional development and enrichment of their language skills and the revision of the variety of methodological tools that will have an impact on the sending organization, its students and teaching colleagues. The target groups in this project are students and participants’ colleagues, who will have the opportunity to learn new teaching style and appreciate the improvement of language skills of young teachers whose professionalism can bring a positive assessment of the school. Other benefits include the fact that the teachers who have achieved the C1 / C2 level, will teach elective course to prepare students for taking the international exams in languages. The teachers will also be able to teach in greater depth and detail with the certainty of their own experience in the graduation courses. Last but not least, all printed materials, games, ideas for teaching and other know-how, such as on-line support and e-learning will be provided to the school.
