The german-turkish youth exchange „Kaleidoscope Europe“, organised by Green Youth Germany and Genc Yesiller took place from the 1st until the 9th of September 2014 in Istanbul, Turkey. A kaleidoscope generally is a 12 to 15cm long tube with small coloured objects at the end. Looking through the kaleidoscope the viewer sees different patterns, which change in the moment of moving. As diverse and flexible are the views of Europe. Based on the three topics (youth-)participation, environment and EU-citizenship the project “Kaleidoscope Europe” focused on the youth’s perspective on Europe. Each organization sent 10 young participants between 18 and 27 years. We aimed at reflecting on how youth in both countries think of German-Turkish relations, which ways of participation they have and which topics are important due to their social commitment.
GRÜNE JUGEND as well as Genc Yesiller are organizations with an environmental program wherefore all questions were discussed from this point of view. Through this project we wanted to encourage the group to discuss the similarities and differences of their young green activism in the two countries and to encourage them to develop a European perspective on the relevant topics. Priority was given to non-formal learning experiences and inter-cultural dialogue in order to further the understanding between the participants. In order to shed light on possibilities of participation, we involved players of politics, civil society and science and discussed with them in workshops and expert interviews.
Due to the exchange and the experiences and knowledge the participants gained, they are more aware of their function as agents of change and vision multipliers. Therefore they will actively help bridging the gap between Germany and Turkey in the future to strengthen solidarity and tolerance on both sides.
