"Young people and NonViolent Communication" is a youth exchange project among 24 young people aged 16-18: 8 youngsters from Spain, 8 from France and 8 from Lithuania.
The exchange will take place from September 7th to 14th, 2014 in Spain, both in Barcelona and in a youth camp in Sant Quirze Besora (in Barcelona), a space in nature which shall help the young people focus on the activities of the exchange and take maximum advantage of it.
The young people participating in the exchange are youngsters at risk of social exclusion by the fact that they live in neighbourhoods with large socio-economic needs, with high unemployment especially among the young people, with high rates of immigration and racism problems. This situation is similar for the young people of Santa Coloma (Barcelona), Vilnius (Lithuania) and Marseille (France). Their neighbourhoods have very specific problems of coexistence that we believe could be improved by providing the young people with nonviolent communication tools. In order to do this, we shall select young people who are already active agents in their communities so that their training and participation in the exchange may impact positively in resolving minor conflicts in their immediate surroundings and help them become experts in nonviolent communication in their neighbourhood.
The workshops and activities will seek to focus on the needs of the group and will include: exercises, role plays and games which explore and incorporate the NonViolent Communication (NVC), ie, a reflection on the theoretical aspects of the model developed by Marshall Rosenberg and psychotherapeutic practices to facilitate relaxation, awareness, connection, and the incorporation of learning. The sessions will include practical activities in pairs and groups. From real situations in our neighbourhoods we shall work on formulas to improve these situations through our communication. The methodology that we use comes from an educational model based on active-participatory education. We shall encourage the young people to actively participate in their own learning from their experiences, perceptions, opinions, etc., individually and on a group level. Participation allows the young people to reflect on their reality (violence, racism, injustice, prejudice, causes, consequences, contradictions, etc.) and to look for alternatives at a group level. To work on violence we shall use meaningful learning, based on Freire's methodology, which involves participants evoking or starting from their experiences as an effective way to learn and enhance their skills.
The aim of the exchange is for the young people to share conflict situations which they might have experienced in their neighbourhoods (each group of young people will bring an scenario to work on during the exchange) to jointly seek solutions; and for them to learn about NonViolent Communication in order to be able to apply this methodology in their day-to-day situations. Besides, once they return to their neighbourhoods, the young people will organise a workshop on NonViolent Communication, in order to share with their community what they have learned during the exchange. From Fora de Quadre we will record a video in order to create small video capsules on NonViolent Communication to help the young people with their dissemination of their work and for the general difussion of the project.
The project therefore aims for the participants to reflect on the violence and injustice which they live in and provide them with tools to deal with them. This approach is intended to empower them to be active participants in resolving conflicts in their neighbourhoods walking this way towards a more inclusive society. In addition, the project provides three groups of young people with few resources and different cultures the opportunity to meet and learn and share the situation they live in, and, thus, somehow, help them feel more European citizens.
