We want to launch a theatre-based European summercamp for a two-week period together with 50 participants from four countries. Participants will come from a diversity of disadvantaged backgrounds, most of them having difficulties in finding a job and mastering the important transition phase from school and higher education into employment. Five organisations from very different backgrounds from France, Germany, Hungary and Italy will participate and send one trainer each. The 50 participants will be divided in five sub-groups, mixed by nationality, age, gender, educational and social backgrounds – each sub-group is lead by one trainer. This settings offers a probably so-far unknown international exposure and intercultural learning experience with the goal to overcome thinking in stereotypes. The whole group is working towards the production of a classical play of European world literature, in this case Schiller’s “The Robbers”. The play is a blueprint for youth issues like identity and personality, rebellion and society, fight and freedom, family and boundaries as well as stepping up for your own rights and finding your way into society. It will provide a common point of interest and focus and provoke debate about these topics. The debate about the topic is facilitated in different seminars, fostering the understanding of the European dimension of the play and the project and also raising awareness of or common European cultural heritage. The five sub-groups work individually on specific roles of the play in the first week of the project and in the second week the groups will be merged to a uniform play. The play will be performed in a premiere in front of a public audience usually ending with long-lasting standing ovations. This will provide a unique sense of achievement for participants and increase their self-esteem; a feeling many of them have unfortunately lacked before in their lives. Participants will not only perform the play, but are also responsible for the stage design, the sound and light system as well as the preparation of he costumes, make-up and hair design. This enables each participant to find his or her appropriate role in the production of the play and offers a holistic learning experience, developing multiple key and transversal competences in an informal way. The overall goal of the project is to offer an outstanding opportunity for personal development for disadvantaged young Europeans, who normally don’t have the opportunity to participate in such projects. The project will be hosted in Witten, Germany where the lead partner is running its own rehearsal and theatre centre. Participants will need to train their mobility skills not only by traveling to Germany, but also by using the public transportation from different hostels to the rehearsal room. The overall project language is English, given the participants the great opportunity to practice English and acquire conversational language skills. The project partners will put great emphasis on the assessment and certification of the skills and competences acquired by the participants during the project. Further, the partners will disseminate the results of the project in social media, the press and on the websites of the partner organisation.
