Jean Monnet Chair - University of Washington
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The new Jean Monnet Chair at the University of Washington will encompass an integrated project of activities designed to further strengthen EU Studies on our campus and across the nation. The project, “Europe in Transition”, will be implemented under the leadership of Dr. James Caporaso, Professor of Political Science and a leading US expert on EU integration. These activities will focus on the deepening EU integration and institutional development that has followed in the wake of global economic crisis. A former chair of the European Union Studies Association, Professor Caporaso has spent a career researching and teaching EU topics. His expertise forms the foundation for the proposed Jean Monnet Chair project, which will include undergraduate and graduate courses, a graduate research grant, and an academic conference that will further European Union studies in the US and train the next generation of EU experts. Professor Caporaso’s ongoing research on the political economy of the EU and Eurozone crisis will inform his teaching and public lectures during the tenure of the grant. A travel grant will be offered to support intensive field research of contemporary EU policy topics by one of Caporaso’s PhD students. Dr. Caporaso will participate in a UW academic conference in year one of the grant on reform in Southern Europe, bringing in a European Jean Monnet Chair colleague to join him in providing European-level perspectives on the issue. He will also travel to a Jean Monnet partner program in Europe to share his research and seek collaboration on future EU-focused projects. Some of Caporaso’s insights will be drawn from an edited volume he will publish on the Eurozone and global financial crisis during the grant.
