Jean Monnet Chair in European Social Policy
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

As stated in the 2013 Progress Report on Turkey, social policy and employment are among the areas where little progress was achieved. Considering the shortcomings, this project aims to contribute to the level of awareness, to understanding and adoption of European social policy in order to support Turkey’s alignment process to the EU. Besides, the Chair aims to provide a platform where various target groups can come together, discuss and exchange views & experiences in a scientific context. Thus, it is aimed to prevent the misinformation on EU and social policy in the alignment process of Turkey. Target groups: Graduate & post graduate students and senior & young academics from disciplines of labour economics & industrial relations, EU studies and medicine; members of trade unions; members of Izmir Union of Chambers of Craftsmen and Artisans (IUCCA) and policy makers. Within the 3 years’ period: -5 BA/MA/PhD courses related with European social policy, taught during 3 years for 630 hours and 885 students in total. -5 events at different venues and with different speakers and audience for each. -Chair book on European Social Policy and Turkey involving contributions of academics from various disciplines and universities.-Establishment of new website for the Chair for increasing the visibility and publicity JM activities. This JM Chair will be crucial for the continuation of JM activities at the hosting university because the current JM actions (2 JM Modules, 1 JM Center of Excellence) will terminate in 2014. Besides at national level, there is no JM Chair in European Social Policy which is a shortcoming considering the problematic aspects of this area in Turkey. This JM Chair will create a network of European Social policy with the academics, students, trade union members, craftsmen, artisans and policy makers by enabling them to exchange expertise and to develop new collaborations regarding European social policy and Turkey’s alignment process.
