PROJECT
FINISHED
The project proposes the establishment of a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU Politics and Policies at the University of Nicosia. The general aims of the project are to promote excellence and innovation in teaching and research in EU studies through a multi-disciplinary and cross-sectoral approach, equip students and young professionals with knowledge of European Union subjects and foster the dialogue between the academic world and policy-makers, in particular to enhance governance of EU policies. The activities of the project will be divided into teaching and the organization of events. Teaching activities will be based on existing courses on EU subjects (institutions and governance, and integration) and the introduction of a new interdisciplinary M.A. degree on EU Public Law and Politics jointly offered by the Department of Law and the Department of European Studies and International Relations of the University of Nicosia. The project’s events will include workshops, round-table debates and annual conferences on three thematic areas each of which will be assigned an Academic Coordinator and will network with invited Jean Monnet Chairs from other countries (three for each event) among other high level experts in order to gather competence, as well as prioritize openness to civil society through the engagement of multiple stakeholders. The three areas are: 1) higher education policies and reforms in the European Higher Education Area, 2) multidisciplinary approaches to developments in the geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean, and 3) the challenges presented to the EU by migration phenomena and policies. The incorporation of external stakeholders will extend to the dissemination and exploitation strategies of the project with the involvement of state media and the local representation of the European Parliament Office as well as a strong and sustainable online presence that will bridge the project to the existing Jean Monnet Chair of the host institution.
