Interkulturelles Lernen mit Auslandspraktikum in der ErzieherInnenausbildung
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The College for social pedagogy(FSP1) in Hamburg allows an annual 28 students to attend a four-month internship within the training to the approved educators in other European countries. The Commissioner for international cooperation and intercultural pedagogy at the FSP1 will organize this internship. There are longstanding contacts with partner institutions in other European countries. Also continually more partners and new countries are included in the project. The goal of this international internship is to expand the intercultural competence of the students and to strengthen the ability of empathy for people feeling foreign in Hamburg by gaining this experience in other countries. The internship is embedded in the elective course "intercultural learning", which over three semesters is taught in six lessons a week. Within this elective course, students are prepared on this stay abroad in terms of content as well as organizationally. Elements of the concept are a four-month language course in preparation, as well as language course in the target country. During the internship, students work 7.5 hours a day in the children's and youth facilities currently in Austria, Spain, Sweden, Latvia and Turkey. Also, 10 days of culture are available to get to know the culture of the target country. The partner institutions in the target country support and accompany the students. There is also an instructor, provided by the partnerinstitutions which accompany the students educationally. The Commissioner for intercultural pedagogy and international cooperation are in a close email and telephone contact with the partner institutions. In addition, these collaborate with the “Europe team”, a team of teachers of the FSP1. The team jointly developed the concepts for the elective classes, as well as for the supervision of students in the internship. The students are visited by teachers of the Europe team for 4-5 days and these teachers are in email contact with the students. After returning from the internship the experiences are reflected and transmitted on the future educational work in Germany. This extends the long-term effect on the profession and on the personality of the participants. They are on the one hand, multiplier that influence the attitudes of children and young people against foreign migrants in Germany as well as fringe groups. On the other hand, the international experience strengthens the confidence in their own abilities and promotes acceptance, tolerance and empathy. With this project we hope to provide a contribution to the peaceful coexistence of cultures in Europe.
